Gel Light Beauty Shoot - Image Bank

I really like this photograph because of the gel lighting, I think the subtlety of this can change the mood of the image in a small way, if this had no coloured lighting then it would be quite a boring photograph, but with the colour it is a lot more interesting, the blue lighting makes the photograph seem sadder. This is an excellent portrayal of how light can change the emotion behind an image, cold colours like blue bring a sadder emotion to an image, whilst red, orange, and pink bring happier emotions to a photograph.

This photograph is interesting because of the colour that the photographer has chosen to put over the girl, he could've chosen a red or pink colour which would be more fitting to the image, but instead they chose a blue/green colour. I think the reason for this might be to show a contrast, the blue lights reflecting off of her make her seem robotic.

This photograph works really well, the gel lighting creates a very moody effect, the photograph looks very cold and sad, but with some rage behind it because of the red at the back. I also really like this photograph because of the black background, it is very dark but we can see some lights reflecting off of something in the background, this creates more mystery than it would if it was just plain black. It also makes the photograph more interesting to look at.

I like this image because of the lighting on it,  I think that the red lights make the image seem quite angry, this is because of the harshness of the lights, the image is very dark and the red seems to be the only thing lighting it up so that makes the red incredibly strong in this image.

Gel Lighting Beauty Shoot - Straight Images

Gel Lighting Beauty Shoot - Technique

Key Light - The main light used to light the subject
Beauty Dish - A circular dish which is flexible - if it's white it is more diffusive, if it is silver it has more contrasted directional lighting.
Diffusion Sock - The cover placed on the Beauty Dish, it makes the light more diffused (more even)
Honey Comb - Something put over the light to control the direction of the light, this restricts the direction of the light
Fill Light - The lighting placed under the Beauty Dish which fills in the shadows
Back Light - This light separates the subject from the background, it's behind the model and it lights up parts such as the hair.
Colour Gel: A transparent coloured material that is used in filmography, photography or theatre for coloured lighting or for colour correction

Lighting Diagram:

This is a lighting diagram that my shoot group drew. it shows us how we put the lights when we set up the studio, the lighting diagram is a good reference point for what to do if we want to recreate the shoot. The two back lights had gels over them, they changed the lights colour which caused the effect that we can see in our photographs. We also used a fill light and a key light, these made the photograph look lighter. if we had just used the gel lights it would've been too dark because the gel lights, especially the dark blue gels, block a lot of light getting through.
